Conventional penetration radars operate in the region from 100Mhz to 1000 Mhz, depending on the desired penetration and resolution, and on the properties of the soils that have to be penetrated. Typically a penetration of 1-20m is possible,with the deeper penetrations being restricted to very low-loss materials such as dry sands and frozen soils. IRC is currently developing GPR systems in the HF, where penetration of 100's of meters is anticipated due to the significantly lower absorption and scattering losses at these frequencies.
